Grilled Cheese Social’s The Prefect

Today is the fourth anniversary of my mom’s passing and I don’t think she would have liked this sandwich, which makes it kind of funny that I’m posting a review of it today. One day soon, I’ll post a review of one of her favourite things to cook and eat from Looney Spoons. I just really felt like eating a grilled cheese this week.

I wasn’t lying when I said I was obsessed with Grilled Cheese Social. Honestly, she is my spirit animal and has the best job in the world. I have a list of sandwiches I want to try and I looked at it the other day and landed on this one. I mean really, how could I go wrong with herbed cream cheese? Especially when it is homemade – totally my jam.

Just a couple of tid bits for you all about this marvellous creation called The Prefect. I never knew you could buy sliced pumpernickel! At first I could only find the giant round one your mom probably makes spinach dip in at family get togethers and holidays but then I did a quick scan of the breads that come in on a truck and found just what I was looking for! Tip of the day, read the labels on the shelves rather than try and read what is on packages and containers – time saver, I promise. You never know what you’ll find – for me, it was sliced pumpernickel.

For the herbed cream cheese, I used green onion instead of chives because like I said last time I used a recipe that called for chives.. I couldn’t actually find them in the grocery store (or maybe I’m just lazy and I already had green onion in the fridge..). I also used dry herbs instead of fresh. The ingredients list says “chopped”, which I assume means fresh, but I just used dry herbs because I already had them. I just went based on taste for this. Unfortunately for me, I am not a huge fan of dill and the taste was pretty strong. So use your judgement wisely. I believe in you!

Neeext: I bought “Whipped” Cream Cheese. Who knew that even existed? Not gonna lie, it was a wee bit tempting when I was at the store to just buy the one that was already herb flavoured, but alas, I had to try this out for all of you! Take one for the team, one might say. Just kidding. Making the herbed cream cheese for this sandwich was just as easy as buying it premade! The only thing I think I would do differently, is use regular cream cheese as opposed to whipped. For me, once it heated up, it was just a bit too soft. So if you just buy regular cream cheese and leave it on your counter for a bit, it’ll soften enough for you to stir – plus as you do stir, it will continue to soften. But this will just be a personal preference. Like if you already have one or the other in the fridge, why would you go buy more?

Does anyone know what a peppadew is? Because I for one, did not know that was a thing before I read this post. And I couldn’t find them in the grocery store…. so I still don’t actually know. The alternative was cherry peppers – the only jar I could find at the store were “hot”. I just grabbed a few roasted red peppers from the olive bar since I was only making one sandwich anyways. I think they were a good alternative!

Oh! Another thing my grocery store didn’t have was the honey turkey. I just got regular turkey and then added a little bit of honey inside the sandwich. I probably should have used more honey, because I really didn’t taste it much. I think I need a new store.

Definitely give that link up there a click, the post is totally worth a read and then you’ve got to go to another link for the sandwich itself. I promise it will be worth all of the work it takes to get there! Actually, if I’m honest, this might be one of the fastest grilled cheese sandwiches you’ll ever make (that has more than just cheese). Please let me know if there are any grilled cheeses you want me to review, or if you’ve made one I want to know too!

Enjoy!
